Data Protection & Privacy Policy

We care deeply about building a product that you will love and trust. As such, Digest, Inc. (“we” or “us”) are providing this Data Protection & Privacy Policy to inform you about how we collect, process, protect, and give you control over your data when you use our sites, apps, platforms, and content (“Services” or simply, “Digest”).

This policy is incorporated into our Terms of Service and you must agree to it to use Digest.

The information we collect about you falls into two general categories:

  • Information you choose to share with or post to Digest
  • Information we collect automatically through your use of Digest

We collect information from you so that we can:

  • develop, provide, and improve Digest Services
  • communicate with you to administrate your Digest account, provide customer support, or market our Beta if you are on our waitlist
  • verify your identity and prevent fraud
  • analyze the usage of our Services to make them better
  • monitor and protect our Services and the Digest community
  • enforce our policies

Unlike most of our competitors, we do not collect or buy any information about you from third parties for any reason. If we need to do this in the future to provide you a service within Digest, we will let you know.

1. Information you choose to share with or post to Digest

Account Information

What We Store
  • email address
  • phone number
Purpose

We use your phone number to uniquely identify you and log you into Digest, and your email address to contact you for administrative, transactional, or marketing purposes.

Choices You Can Make

You can opt out of all emails from us, except for administrative ones that relate to your Digest account. When you log out of the app, you may do so partially or fully. It is your choice. If you choose to only partially log out, your username will be displayed on the login screen and the app will remember your phone number, so that you don’t need to enter it again the next time you log in.

Profile Information

What We Store
  • username
  • avatar image
  • name
  • bio
Purpose

Your username is how other users will uniquely identify you within Digest, and your avatar, name, and bio let you share more information about yourself to other users.

Choices You Can Make

You only have to create a username to use Digest. The rest is optional, and you are free to use your real name or a pseudonym.

Content you create and post to Digest

What We Store
  • digests
  • posts
  • replies
  • interactions (e.g. emojilikes)
Purpose

Creating and posting thoughts, pictures, and links, and looking at and interacting with other users’ posts is the core functionality of Digest.

Choices You Can Make

If you prefer, you can simply look at other users’ posts within Digest. Interacting and posting your own content is optional. If you choose to post content, use caution, as your content is public by nature. It will be displayed to other users within Digest and they may copy or take screenshots, and share your content outside of Digest.

Customer Support Information

What We Store

Information you share with us to help figure out problems that you are having with Digest

Purpose

We will use the information you share to help resolve your issue, and if relevant, to fix issues with Digest that might also affect other users.

Choices You Can Make

You choose what information you share with us.

Feedback you share with Digest

What We Store

Criticism or suggestions you share with us

Purpose

We value feedback from our users and use it to make Digest better.

Choices You Can Make

You choose what, if anything, you share with us.

Beta Waitlist Signup information

What We Store
  • email address
  • preferred username
Purpose

We will reserve your preferred username for you, and use your email address to send you the Digest app to install once it is available to you. We may also display your reserved username on our website for marketing purposes.

Choices You Can Make

You choose whether or not to join our Beta waitlist, and you can leave by simply unsubscribing.

2. Information we collect automatically through your use of Digest

User Generated Content

What We Store

Content and personal information you write, copy/paste into, or upload to Digest, e.g. text, links, and photos (without metadata like location or date/time taken)

Purpose

We need to store and process your information to make it available to you and for you within Digest.

App Activity Information

What We Store

How you use the app—e.g. which version, how often, how long, screens you spend time in, user interface buttons and elements you click on, etc., along with information about the device that you installed the app on—device identifiers, IP addresses, model names & version numbers, language & country settings, etc. We use Google Analytics for Firebase, operated by Google, LLC, to collect this information in the Digest iOS app, and we tag the information with a depersonalized user identifier that Google cannot use to determine the identity of an individual user. We do not use any advertising features offered by Google Analytics for Firebase.

Purpose

To make the right improvements to Digest, we need to understand how our users use it. We look at this information in aggregate and not by individual users.

Crash & Error Reports

What We Store

Information about how the app was used, and the code that was run before an error or crash occurred. We use Firebase Crashlytics, operated by Google, LLC, to report crashes and errors, and we tag the information with a depersonalized user identifier that Google cannot use to determine the identity of an individual user.

Purpose

Relevant and specific details about errors and crashes help our engineers figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. They also help us correlate errors with problems that our users report to us through Customer Support. We will maintain a scoped copy of these reports in our testing system to ensure that issues get and stay fixed.

Notification-related Information

What We Store

App-specific device tokens, current timezone

Purpose

The device token serves as an “address” so that we can deliver Digest notifications to you when you opt-in to receiving them. Your timezone helps us send those notifications at the right times.

Website Activity Information

What We Store

Email address, username to reserve, how you use our website (collected via cookies by Google Analytics, a web analysis service operated by Google LLC) — pages you visit, how long you spend, IP addresses, location, referring website URLs, etc.

Purpose

Our website functionality is minimal:

  1. You can join our Beta waitlist by submitting your email address and a username to reserve. You will receive emails from us about our Beta that let you know when you’ll have access to install the app and sign up, and you can unsubscribe at any time. We may also display your reserved username on our website for marketing purposes.
  2. You can browse our website and read our policy and help documents.

Backend Service Usage Information

What We Store

Log files that may include the content you share to Digest (log files do not include identifying information, like phone number, email, and name)

Purpose

Our app and website rely on our backend services for a lot of their functionality. These services generate log files that help us understand how the app and website are being used, detect problems before they affect our users, diagnose user complaints, and improve Digest.

App Performance Information

What We Store

The app version and how it is performing—e.g. how long it takes to start up, load data from the network, etc., network URLs that the app requests (not including parameters or payloads) along with their response times and payload size, information about the device that you installed the app on—e.g. device model, OS version, etc., and the context in which you are using the app—e.g. type of network, signal strength, carrier network, and country. We use Firebase Performance Monitoring, operated by Google, LLC, to help us gain insight into the performance characteristics of the Digest iOS app.

Purpose

To make the right improvements to Digest, we need to understand how the app performs in different contexts—on different devices, on different networks, in different countries, etc.

Marketing Email Activity Information

What We Store

How you interact with emails we send you (collected by MailChimp, an online marketing platform operated by The Rocket Science Group LLC) — if/when you open them, links in the email that you click on, the application & device you use to read the email (name/version of app, IP address, operating system, etc.)

Purpose

We want to send you emails that are valuable to you and that you don’t consider spammy. MailChimp helps us determine this by letting us view and analyze how you and others interact with the emails we send, and helps us ensure that the emails look right in the mail clients used by the recipients of our emails. They also let you unsubscribe easily and quickly from our marketing email list.

3. How Long We Keep Your information

We will keep your personal information and content for the lifetime of your Digest account. You can delete specific content you create and post at any time, and if you delete your account, the following information will be deleted as well:

  • your account information
  • your profile information
  • the content you create and post to Digest — digests, posts, replies
  • interactions you have with other users’ content — follows, likes

After we process the deletion, we may keep your information for a reasonable period of time for backup and audit purposes, or for legal reasons.

4. What We Share or Disclose

i. With other Digest users

The content you share on Digest (what you create and post, or the interactions you have with others’ digests and posts), and your profile information are public by nature. They will be shown to other users within Digest. Your account information (phone number and email) is private to you, and will never be shown to other Digest users.

The ‘Hide Me from X’ feature allows you to hide parts of your profile information and Digest content from another user. You can find details on what is hidden here.

ii. With the general public

If you sign up for our Digest Beta waitlist and reserve a username, the username that you reserve may be displayed on the same page under the heading “Already Reserved”. We will not display the email address that reserved it.

iii. With third party service providers

We may share your information with third-party service providers who assist us in providing our Services and operating our business. We require those service providers to maintain the confidentiality of any personal information we provide to them, and to not use the information we share with them for purposes other than the services they are providing to us.

These service providers fall into the following categories:
  • Cloud infrastructure
  • Security
  • Analytics
  • Logging & Monitoring
  • Customer support
  • Email marketing
  • Beta App Distribution

Upon request, we can provide the list of actual third-party service providers with whom your data may have been shared.

iv. With third parties for legal or safety reasons

We may disclose your information as required by law or valid legal process, to protect someone’s rights, safety, or property, or to enforce our policies.

v. Through business transfers

In the event of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or bankruptcy, we may have to sell, assign, or transfer some or all of our assets. If your information will be included in the transfer, we will notify you, and give you the opportunity to export your data, opt out, and close your account.

5. How You Can Access and Control Your Information

Our goal is to give you the tools to access and control your data effectively. As we are currently in Beta, some of these tools are in the process of being built. Until then, if you need to do any of the following and cannot do so yourself directly within Digest, please contact our Customer Support from within the app or email [email protected], and we will gladly assist you.

  • View your account information and content within Digest
  • Correct your account information and content within Digest
  • Delete your content and/or account
  • Deactivate your account
  • Export your account information & content

6. Children

Our Services are not intended for persons under 16 years of age, and we do not knowingly solicit or collect information from persons under 16 years of age. If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child under 16 years of age has provided personally identifiable information to us without your consent, please contact us at [email protected]. If we become aware that a person under 16 years of age has provided us with personally identifiable information, we will delete such information from our Services.

7. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may make changes to this Privacy Policy from time to time, especially when we launch new features or Services. If we reasonably believe the change is material, we will notify you prior to the change becoming effective. By continuing to use Digest, you are agreeing to the new terms. If you do not agree, you cannot use Digest, and you should delete your account before the effective date of the changes.

8. Users in the European Union

If you’re a user of Digest in the European Union, we have some additional information for you:

  • Digest, Inc. is the data controller of your personal information.
  • We process your information under the following legal bases:
    • Contract. By creating a Digest account you’ve entered into a contract with us and we will process your information as necessary for your use of Digest.
    • Legitimate Interest. We have a legitimate business interest to use your information to provide, improve, monitor, and operate our Services, to communicate with you, to keep our Services and community safe and protected, and enforce our policies, as needed, for these purposes.
    • Consent. When you provide consent within the Services for certain Digest features (e.g. push notifications), we will process your information for the purpose of providing you those specific features. You may withdraw your consent at any time by changing your preferences within Digest; the app provides context-sensitive controls to manage preferences for all relevant features. If you withdraw consent for a specific feature, we will stop processing your information only for that feature.
    • Legal Obligation. We may use your information, as required by law or valid legal process.
  • Digest Services are hosted in the United States and use a content delivery network (CDN) to distribute data to users around the world. • As noted above in Section 4, we provide tools within the app for you to control your personal data. Box 1, Kirkland, WA 98083, USA; or by emailing [email protected].
